Shadira Andrews Writing #5 Night My whole heart stopped when I saw the blood dripping from my arm. Today was a regular day but my whole life changed. It was a sunny day with my cousins, sister, friends and I when suddenly I get a huge scar on my right back-hand. It might look like a burn but it’s not, it’s a terrible long lasting scar. This raggedy old scar is about nine years old but I still remember every single detail of how this happened. An almost trip to the hospital wasn’t supposed to happen with just a game of basketball that I wasn’t playing.This almost fun day was one of the worst days of my life; this was the night of my life. Why do we have to play tag? This game makes me very exhausted but I have to other wise my crush is going to think I am fat. I am going to need about five bottles of Gatorade to stay energized though. We played tag around the school-yard for about 15 minutes but I had to use the restroom so I told everyone that I’ll be back in a couple of minutes. Just before I was completely out of the yard my sister called my name to ask me to get her something from the house.The next thing you know a boy ends up accidently knocking me unto the floor and I slide across the concrete. If I was car and I was making a sharp turn you would only hear me screaking. The boy was playing basketball and I happened to stop right in front of the basketball court. I can’t believe I’m lying on this concrete with nothing but blood and a boy I don’t even know next to me. I blacked out for a moment and couldn’t hear anything, it was so silent but everyone talked. All I could see and remember is the faces on everyone’s face.My sister looked as if she was having a baby, and the boy looked as if he saw something ghastly. Everyone was panicking but what I couldn’t get out of my head is the fact that my stockings ripped; those were new stockings that my mom finally got me so you could say m y facial expression was being annoyed and irritated. By now I have snapped out of my black out. My cousins helped me up while the shamefaced boy offered me bandages. I just remember I really have a full bladder right about now.Night, pain, dusk, and agony is all that filtered the air as I was being carried by a dozen of my relatives, I mean come on was I that heavy did my crush need to know I needed half of dozen people carrying me. All I was thinking was â€Å"Am I going to get into trouble for ripping my brand new stockings? † As soon as I got into the house my dad asked what happened and I just said â€Å"I fell. † I didn’t want my chaos to turn into a royal rumble or something. My dad did the worst thing ever! He grabs alcohol, peroxide, and everything else that’s expected to stings.I automatically start to cry knowing that the felling will soon be excruciating pain. Of course I hate pain and honesty I didn’t feel anything when my skin came off my right back-hand; but when my dad put that alcohol on my open wound I could have said every curse word in the book. Right about now I was speaking gibberish, the pain was unbearable and I couldn’t understand why my dad didn’t just take me to the hospital he is not a doctor. I guess you could say a dad is anything and everything it needs to be at the time being.Pain is such an uncomfortable feeling that even a tiny amount of it is enough to ruin a week. My hand was throbbing and I couldn’t move it or think about it because that just made the situation worst. I tried a lot of things to make the pain fade away. I tried eating ice cream, going to sleep, and even putting a cold rag around the bandage nothing worked. Then, everyone decided to leave me in the house by myself. My mom and dad had to work and my siblings just took it upon themselves to go outside and not tell me. I looked at the clock and it’s approximately five minutes to 12 when there is a kno ck on the door.Now I am not going to lie I was little scared to answer the door since it was so late so since I was short I climbed on the couch’s leg and looked throw the peep hole. It was my crush! Was he going to make fun of me, let’s see? Everything I did our little conversation was the only thing that helped me block out the pain, of course I was blushing he was adorable. I was finally coming into the house with a smile on my face today and that smile easily went away when I saw the time on my round clock, it said it was 12:11 A. M.In conclusion, today was the worst day ever I got hurt pretty bad with a scar that will be on my back-hand for life and I for the first time ever I now know what pain really feels like. I also have a fear of basketball now no lie; every time I play basketball I always seem to get hurt either I get hit in the head with the ball or I hurt my fingers and they become swollen. Every time someone ask me what happened to my hand and if I were burnt, I say no and I have to summarize this whole story. How much food do consumers waste? Not much, a lot, you don’t know, or you don’t care? It doesn’t seem that many consumers do care. In the article, â€Å"On Dumpster Diving† (1993), Lars Eighner uses exposition, description, and narration to criticize consumer wastefulness. Exposition is the literary device that Eighner uses the most throughout this article. Exposition is when the author conveys his story through explanation. Eighner explains certain things rather than telling a word for word story about his experiences. Eighner uses this device often in this article such as when he says, â€Å"I have heard people, evidentially meaning to be polite, use the word foraging, but I prefer to use that word for gathering nuts and berries and such, which I do also according to season and the opportunity†. Eighner does not simply say he disproves of using the word â€Å"foraging† in that way, he explains why he disproves of it. This is the manner in which a majority of the article is told in. Description is another literary device used in this article. When an author writes descriptively they describe what they are discussing in great detail to help the reader better picture what they are saying. There is a bit of descriptive writing in Eighner’s article such as when he says, â€Å"Some students, and others, approach defrosting a freezer by chucking out the whole lot. The mass of frozen goods stays cold for a long time and items may be found still frozen or freshly thawed†. Describing this process, Eighner tells us that consumers waste food because of ignorance. Not knowing a proper procedure or simply not preparing causes more avoidable wastefulness. The third device Eighner uses in this article is narration. Narration is simply telling a story the way it happened. There is no stopping to explain or describe what you are discussing. Eighner practices this device when he says, â€Å"I began scavenging by pulling pizzas out of the dumpster behind a pizza delivery shop. While it lasted I had a steady supply of fresh, sometimes warm pizza†. Eighner tells us this to let us know that instead of donating the good pizza to the needy, the pizza shop just throws it in the  trash. Eighner’s purpose in this essay is to criticize consumer wastefulness. Eighner gives proof of consumer wastefulness in order to open the eyes of consumers so people will care more about what they throw out, and focus more on saving what they can. Eighner’s tone in this article is formal. Eighner writes in a formal tone to let the consumers whom he is addressing know that just because he is homeless does not mean his opinion is unknowledgeable. If anything he should know more about the subject because he has seen it from both sides. Eighner uses a formal tone because the average consumer would think more highly of his opinion if it is written formally, as opposed to informally. The article leaves me wondering whether or not consumers will see and understand what Eighner is trying to convey. Will people see how much food is being wasted? Are people going to start to stop and think about what they are throwing in the trash? Will the amount of wasted food decline, stay the same, or even increase?

Nietzsche uses deists’ intellectuals and gives no or little credibility to their experiences and beliefs. While researchers, scholars, and deists can think about other philosophers’ argument on the subject while reading Murdoch argument, Murdo ch creates a platform where readers can decline or accept her argument at any point. Based on how Murdoch presents her arguments, readers can think that the author has not yet concluded her argument but given her readers a free will to choose what they believe. Nietzsche does not take a psychological path to examine the virtue of duty or responsibility (Friedrich 405). Although both Murdoch and Nietzsche derive their beliefs about morality from nature, Nietzsche quoted that â€Å"each individual has the duty to carry out his passions. During one night in 610CE, when Muhammad was 40, he was in a cave on Mount Hira. God revealed himself to Muhammad. This was called the night of power, and it relates in Surah 95 of the Quran, which is entitled The Blood Clot. When Muhammad returned home, Khadija became his first believer. Then his cousin Ali, a freed slave called Zayd, and one of his closest friends, Abu Bakr, all became followers. There started one of the great religions of the world. Muhammad had a strong belief that there was only one God, the creator. He believed that all humans should be equal in their relationship with this creator. This undermined the tribes of Makkah who, especially the Quarish, rose up against Muhammad and his followers. All through his life, Muhammad fought to establish Islam, to gather followers, and to create a substantial political force. In the 22 years after the first revelation, until Muhammad died in 632CE, God delivered the Quran to Muhammad, his messenger. By the time that God had finished revealing the Quran, Muhammad had moved to Madinah. Hence we get Makkan and Medinan verses. The Makkan verses are usually shorter, more judgemental, and are found towards the end of the Quran. After the second revelation, the night journey, Muhammad migrated to Yathrib, 40 miles north of Makkah, to settle disputes with the pilgrims from that town. He went there with family and followers in 622CE. When he arrived, he built a house, which was later to become the first mosque. He then renamed the town Madinah. This is where the central community was established. After Muhammad died, no one knew if he had named a successor. Usually, it would pass to his eldest son. In the end the leader was chosen by the Muslim community as a person of great personal integrity. This is the belief of the Sunni branch of Islam, who did not want a government, but they wanted to rely on an authoritative ruler. The Shia branch believes that the early history was biased against Ali, Muhammads cousin. When Ali did become the leader, those who believed Ali to be the true successor formed the separate Party of Ali. The Shia branch wanted a leader from the family of Muhammad. Islam was greatly diversified by the achievements of the first four caliph successors to Muhammad. Abu Bakr had more than a personal belief of Islam and he had a belief of political ideology. * Umar (634-644 CE) He continued after Abu Bakr and captured Jerusalem and North Africa. * Uthman (644-656 CE) After Ali turned down the caliphate, Uthman was chosen and he expanded the empire through North Africa and Eastwards to India and China. * Ali (656-661 CE) He made Muawiya co-caliph, a disastrous move. Two parties were formed, one supporting Ali, the other supporting Muawiya. Islam today is the second largest religion in the world and it is growing fast. It is significant in the modern politics. After publishing several patents, in 1888 he published his first work at Columbia University in New York: A New System of Alternate-Current Motors and Transformers, where he proved the commutators could be dispensed from motors, by using polyphase currents, which headed him to experiment more with AC and high frequencies, guiding to some of his most relevant inventions (Tesla, 2007). From that moment, until his death, Nikola Tesla developed and published hundreds of patents, articles and books, and received recognitions for his work. Finally in 1943 he died in New York due to unknown causes that will be further reviewed in the third chapter. 1.2 His inventions â€Å"Tesla was an inventor, but he was much more than a producer of new devices: he was a discoverer of new principles, opening many new empires of knowledge which even today have been only partly explored† (ONeill, 2007). As showed on his Life and Work, since Tesla was a young man he started researching and developing his own ideas, improving the motors and generators company. In fact, in 1888 he received the patent for the induction motor still used today (Tesla, 1904). Two years later, he founded with other investors in the Ames Power Plant, the first power station to transmit high voltage AC for long distances (Start Publishing LLC, 2013). The same year he would invent the Tesla Coil and transformer to power wireless lighting systems, which also contributed in radio as a system of transmitting electrical energy and an electrical transmitter as he called it (Tesla, 1904, Chapter 4). In 1899 Nikola Tesla detected a new geo-electrical phenomenon: terrestrial stationary waves, which supported his theory of electricity transportation around the world and later on it would be the basis of the World-Wide Wireless System (Start Publishing LLC, 2013). When in 1900 I obtained powerful discharges of 100 feet (in the Colorado Springs laboratory) and flashed a current around the globe, I was reminded of the first tiny spark I observed in my Grand St. laboratory and was thrilled by sensations akin to those I felt when I discovered the rotating magnetic field (Tesla, 1904). This is how Tesla’s most ambitious project started in 1901: the construction of the Wardenclyffe Tower to send wireless power around the world. Although he invested all his money on his research investors dropped the project and the Wardenclyffe Tower was never finished (Start Publishing LLC, 2013), leaving the uncertainty that still today is maintained if it is possible to send electricity all over the world. 2. The Conspiracy The conspiracy theories behind Nikola Tesla start with his controversial work and hard relationship with colleagues, and the apparent collaboration in the World War II, which supposedly led him to be murdered. Besides that, the use of his research as a basis to develop Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) is another conspiracy attributed to Tesla. There are basically two conspiracy theories behind Tesla’s life and work. The first conspiracy states that Tesla was murdered by powerful bankers from the U.S. because Tesla’s project to provide free energy to the world was not convenient for their economic interest, and the second conspiracy says that Tesla was murdered because some people thought that he had advanced studies to create WMD. To put into context this second theory, it must be taken into consideration that he died while the WWII was taking place and for this reason it can be deduced that, there were some interest on his projects from different military agencies around the world. One thing that cannot be denied is that Nikola Tesla had a brilliant mind, he developed several interesting projects which were decades ahead of their time. By the nature of his inventions, military intelligence circles or giant corporations could be interested on Tesla’s projects. 2.1 Tesla’s Death After Tesla’s death in January 1943, and because of the political-social-economic situation of the time (the WWII) the FBI and some other U.S. Government agencies could be quite interested in Tesla’s ideas and projects regarding weaponry. There was some fear that Tesla’s work could fall into the hands of Soviets or any other powers. Just right after Tesla’s death, his nephew â€Å"Sava Kosanovic† arrived at the hotel where his uncle died, but according to him, there were several technical papers missing as well as a notebook which was marked as â€Å"Government†. An investigator from the FBI said that the U.S. was â€Å"vitally interested† in saving Tesla’s documents, in deed envoys of the Office of Alien Property[2] went to Tesla’s room at the New York Hotel and collect all his belongings, Figure X (PBS, 2004). Figure X (http://www.pbs.org/tesla/ll/fbi_05.html) According to the website www.psb.org after the WWII, the interest of beam weapons grew up, and Tesla’s basic ideas were taking into consideration to develop these weapons, the papers that contain Tesla’s ideas were never found. Many years after this event, scientists have been looking for those papers without any success (PBS, 2004). There is another theory that says that Tesla was murdered by Hitler’s people, according to a guy called Eric Bermen, he was dating a girl, he say that the girl’s father was Otto Skorzeny a legendary SS (Schutzstaffel) involved in the WWII, and an officer-cadet from the Hitler’s bodyguard regime, Figure X. After Skorzeny death, Bermen collect data about Skorzenys Nazi cohorts and created an unpublishing manuscript in which reveal information such as: â€Å"Skorzenys role (with Reinhard Gehlen) in the assassination ofNikola Tesla(suffocation) on January 6, 1943 after tricking Tesla on January 5 into revealing the full details of his most important discoveries and then stealing his most valuable inventions, along with the contents of his safe, which were delivered to Hitler† (Adachi, 2007). Figure X (http://educate-yourself.org/cn/Skorzeny and Hitler 500w010.jpg) 2.2 Tesla’s HAARP project, the conspiracy behind The conspiracy theories about HAARP Electromagnetic waves would be used to make them collide with the ionosphere which would heat, resulting in an alteration of climate, including suspected that these same waves when falling on the earths crust would cause a series of vibrations which could give as a result, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Researchers and scientists believe that the increase in hurricanes, floods and droughts could have been caused by HAARP, HAARP meanwhile said that they only use a small part of the energy that are capable of generating, if so, what would happen if they use the billions of watts that produces the entire project? Even more adventurous opinions say that the mind control may be another objective of HAARP is now known that electromagnetic waves can lead to physical illness; alter the human psyche causing hysteria, hallucinations, items that would be used for crowd control. As we exposed previously, Tesla’s project HAARP had the purpose to delve into the effects of electromagnetic energy on the ionosphere. Conspiracists say that the development of this project had a sinister intention. They claim that HAARP is actually a WMD developed to break satellites and communication by blitzing the atmosphere with electromagnetic waves. These people believe for example, that the blackout in the North of the U.S. and South of Canada in 1993 was a consequence of the HAARP project (Theories Societies, 2008). For this reason, conspiracy theorists affirm that Tesla’s project about the transmission of electricity via wireless had been hushed up by the biggest electrical equipment companies. On the other hand, researcher Bertell R.[3] conducted a research about HAARP and she concluded that the HAARP program directed by the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy was designed tounderstand, simulate and control ionospheric processes that might alter the performance of communication and surveillance systems and with this create the following effects: Produce low frequencies, as a way of communication with sunken submarines. Come to understand the natural ionospheric processes in order to modify or control them. Generate large amounts of high frequency energy, thus with this energy generate ionospheric processes that can be used for defense purposes. Modify some optical emissions which might be used to control radio waves and it’s propagation. So Bertell R. firmly believes that HAARP is not an isolated experiment but it belongs to an integral military program and claims that the project can be sold as random project to the public (Bertell, 1996). Below can be read some other scientists and agencies who think the Project HAARP has a dark side (Global Research, 2007): Prof. Michel Chossudovsky published an article in 2007 in which he state that â€Å"HAARP is a weapon of mass destruction, capable of destabilising agricultural and ecological systems globally.† Physicist Dr Bernard Eastlund called HAARP as the â€Å"the largest ionospheric heater ever built† The State Duma[4] claimed that the U.S. was creating large-scale weapons capable of break radio waves, provoke failures in electric systems, as well as in oil and gas pipelines and it could also affect the mental health of masses. Some people still claim that HAARP is a WMD waiting to be used by the military as a â€Å"death ray†. The credence is that the slight doses of microwaves sent to the ionosphere are just samples compared to the actual power of the machine. Actually they also think that HAARP could also conduct its rays anywhere on earth and can be used to trigger major weather disasters, earthquakes, mass brain damage on a global scale on request. HAARP is not operated by the military of the U.S. nevertheless the project is under the command of the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) this means that somehow it has to be related to the defense of the U.S. 3.
